What’s the difference between Sativa and Indica?

November 11, 2021

Sativa and Indica are the two main types of cannabis plants that many use for medicinal or recreational purposes. Considering their different chemical compositions, these two principal cannabis plants have different effects on the mind and body. Consuming Sativas help people to get their brain high, giving them more energy and supporting them in focusing and doing creative activities. However, Indicas help to get a body high by providing more relaxing effects in muscles. Generally, many believe Sativas get the brain high, and Indicas affect the body. However, these two leading cannabis plant kinds differ in some other characteristics:

Sativa vs Indica: Physical differences:

Botanists apply visual differences between two plant types to identify them. Differences, such as height, leaf shape, and growth pattern, are factors they consider to identify variations in a plant.

Sativas usually grow in hot and humid places with long rays of sunshine, such as Africa, Central America, Southeast Asia, and parts of Western Asia. They grow finger-like leaves and are tall and thin. They can reach elevations of more than 12 feet and take longer to grow than other cannabis varieties.

Indica cannabis plants grow wildly in Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Turkey. The plants have adapted to the Hindu Kush mountains’ typically severe, dry, and unpredictable weather. Indicas are short and stocky, with thick, large, and broad leaves. Compared to Sativas, they generate more buds and grow faster.

Sativa vs Indica: Values of Cannabinoids:

Sativas include a higher amount of THC, and Indicas usually include a higher ratio of CBD. as a result, consumers expect Sativas to have more effects on the brain and Indicas to get the body high.

About Cannabinoids:

Cannabinoids are a group of chemical substances found in cannabis plants. Many of the harmful and good effects of cannabis use can be attributed to these naturally occurring components. Researchers aren’t assured what all of the cannabinoids do, but they’ve distinguished two major ones: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), as well as a few lesser-known substances. THC and CBD are the two components responsible for the effects of using weed. Since the ratio of these cannabinoids differs in Sativas and Indicas, they have different effects on the body.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC):

The psychoactive chemical THC is the principal compound in cannabis plants. It’s the chemical that causes the “high” or euphoria associated with weed consumption. As farmers attempt to generate hybrids with higher THC concentrations, THC levels have been rising in cannabis strains in the past decades.

Cannabidiol (CBD):

CBD has neither harmful nor euphoric properties. It does not result in a “high.” It may, however, provide a variety of physiologic benefits, including pain and nausea relief, seizure prevention, and migraine relief.

Sativa vs Indica: The Effects and Medical Benefits

Because of the difference in their cannabinoid ratio, Sativas and Indicas have different medical benefits and recreational effects.

Since Sativa strains usually include higher amounts of THC, they are mostly used to get a brain high. Euphoria, energy enhancement, increased focus and creativity, and stress relief is some common effects of the Sativas.

On the other hand, Indicas usually include more CBD content and more calming effects. As a result, they are mostly used for medical purposes, such as chronic pains, anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, MDD, insomnia, and inflammations. Their soothing effects can put the consumers in a calm and peaceful state.
